Genesis 11:1-9
There was a time when the whole earth spoke a single language and the same words. And it came about, as people moved eastward, that they found a valley in the land of Shinar and settled there. They said, "Come, let us make bricks, and bake them thoroughly." Back then they used brick for stone, and tar for mortar. Then they said, "Let us organize and build ourselves a city, with a tower whose top reaches far into the sky. It will unite us and keep us from being scattered throughout the earth." The LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the people were building. And the LORD said, "Behold, they are as one, speaking the same language; and this is only the beginning of what they are capable of doing. Let us give them different languages so they will be unable to understand each other." By doing so, the LORD dispersed them throughout the earth; and they stopped building the city. The name of the place was called Babel because it was there that the LORD confused the people by giving them many languages, thus scattering them throughout the earth.
